I believe that first graders need some time to play. It is an important time in our day for them to work together and solve problems. I also hope they are being creative and exploring.

First graders need to move. So, we find time to dance everyday. These kids have rhythm!

We go to the computer lab twice a week. So far the students are discovering things I didn't know! We'll be posting some of that work as soon as we finish it.

We visit the library every Wednesday morning. Our librarian is the most fabulous anywhere. The students love to see her and talk to her. She is also great at helping students find just the right book.

As I mentioned at New School Year Orientation, reading is a big focus in first grade! Everyday we read. At first we were reading for five minutes. Now we are working on reading for ten minutes. By the end of the year we will be reading for twenty to thirty minutes.

In the first few weeks of school we spend a lot of time exploring our materials. I give the students time to play. This helps us learn about our classroom and prepares us to learn with all the materials we have available to us. Also, it's fun!
